The Muddy Branch trail follows the stream through varied terrain, from a paved path in Malcolm King Park in Gaithersburg to Pennyfield Lock on the Potomac River. It’s an ambitious day hike, but there is a series of access points so it can be hiked in segments. The trail is open to everyone, and beloved by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Get out and enjoy it!
Use the map below to plan your trip. Click on the parking icons (P in a circle) for additional information about parking options. Zoom in on Pennyfield Lock to see the location of the portable toilets, and the “finish” flag where the Muddy Branch meets the Potomac River. You can pan along the trail to see access points (hiker icon) and fords (boot in water icon)—places where the stream crosses the trail (there are rocks or a shallow area, but no bridge).
